Greetings and welcome to my website! My name is Ben Milstein - I am a pianist, piano teacher, composer of electronic music, DJ, and post-production audio engineer. For more information about what I have been up to in each of these areas lately, head over to my news page.

I have been living, working, and performing in Portland, Oregon since 2004. I currently maintain a group of piano students ranging in age from 6 to mid-60s, and perform as accompanist for several local choral organizations. I also make use of my home studio to work as a mix engineer; I take multi-track recordings and blend them into a cohesive, musical finished product.

All of my work is centered around the idea of helping other people achieve the best possible musical experiences and results. Whether teaching, accompanying, performing electronic music as a DJ, or engineering, I’m alway operating from that perspective. My greatest joy is to elevate someone else’s musical experience beyond what they thought possible.

If you would like to know a little bit more about my background, here is my 3rd-person bio:

Ben has studied the Taubman approach to piano with Robert Durso (Co-Founder and Senior Director of the Golandsky Institute) since 1986. He has also studied with Edna Golandsky, John Bloomfield and Deborah Cleaver, all Golandsky Institute faculty.

In 2001 Ben received his M.F.A. in New Media Composition from the California Institute for the Arts (Valencia, CA) where he studied with Morton Subotnick, Mark Trayle and Tom Erbe. In 1997 he earned his B.A. in Composition from Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY) where he studied with Joan Tower, Daron Hagen and Richard Teitelbaum. Ben also attended the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music (Oberlin, OH) where he studied Trumpet Performance with Byron Pearson.

He has been on the faculty of the University of Westminster Summer School program in London and Toni Morrison's Atelier program at Princeton University. Ben also served as Teaching Assistant for Music Theory, Ear Training and Composition classes at both Bard College and CalArts, and founded an after school Composition program for high school students while pursuing his studies at CalArts. He has also been a Teaching Assistant at the Golandsky Institute Summer Symposium at Princeton University.
